You can download the latest version of the Jooma com_album component at the download area.
This new release will  contains some bugfixes, mpeg upload and thumnails,  graphical improvements and language support. 

I'm looking for  people who would like to help to write language files.

 

It supports view, movies, slide-show, upload, auto-thumbnail, comments and rotate functions.

Managing is done from the front-end for Joomla users with editing rights (or higher).

com_album has 2 levels, category's (mostly used as a Years) and "Albums", technically a directory and a sub-directory.

To create category's or delete category's and complete Albums you will need a front-end user with admin rights, for all other modify actions you need a user with at least editor rights.
This is to prevent non-admin-users to destroy a complete album, or worse, a category containing albums with a lot of pictures.  If so, Editors will have to ask Admins to do these actions.

In the back-end component, you can change the defaults:

To create a category, you need to have Admin rights, you can change this, e.g to Editor, so people with editor rights can create catagory's.

For sites with fixed width, we advise to place the Thumnails above or below, so the component will fix in your template. 

After installing, create a menu item to the com_album component and log in to the front-end website with an account having the correct rights.
You will see, a view/edit select box will appear.
First create a top-level directory (a category) as an admin user and than a sub-directory (an album).

Now you can upload your photo's, jpg of gif or your movies. Also uploading a zip/tar/etc file containing more pictures or movies is possible, consider the max upload size of your site.

If you use the year for category name and the month (e.g. 08) for the Album name, com_album always  will start in the current mont, if you don't want that, or want to point to a special Album, you van make a menu item as a Link URL (parent window with browser navigation)

PROBLEMS ? 

- However com_album is developped for Joomla 1.0, you can run it with Joomla 1.5, but you have to enable the compatibility mode, if Joomla 1.5 is stable there will be an official 1.5 compatible release.

- com_album only works with unix, now, in future this will change.

- if you want to thumbnail movies you need to install ffmpeg 

- uploading is possible for tar, tar.gz, tgz, zip, rar, e.g. , but on OS you should install unzip and unrar to use these. 

- In this version com_album need the exec function from php, be sure you do NOT have these options in your disable_functions in your php.ini : 
disable_functions = exec
If so, it will result in errors like:"Warning: exec() has been disabled for security reasons....."
If you do not have the rights to edit php.ini, you should contact your provider.

 Still have problems? 

- com_album can generate lots of debugging information, if you simply enable site-debugging
administation - "Global Configuration" -> "Debug Site" = yes
